.22 Shoots

Held on the 4th Wednesday of every month. 7:30pm start.

At the Te Awamutu Smallbore Clubrooms in Factory Rd, Te Awamutu.

We shoot paper targets from three positions – prone, sitting and standing. In addition we also have a novelty shoot in the standing position to test your rapid-fire skills.

All visitors are welcome to come and experience smallbore shooting in a relaxed social atmosphere. Bring your own rifle along and improve your shooting skills, or borrow a club rifle.

New shooters are encouraged to come along to practise their shooting skills in a safe and controlled environment, with plenty of support from experienced shooters in the club, willing to share tips and tricks.

Cost is $7 cash per person. This covers range hireage and 20 rounds.

Please note only standard or subsonic ammo can be used in the range.

Social Nights

We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, starting at 7:30pm – with a break in April to avoid clashing with The Roar.

At the Te Awamutu & District  Memorial RSA, 381 Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu.

Come along and hear from our guest speakers as they share their stories, insights, and experiences. Their talks are always captivating, and you’re sure to learn something new every time.

A few of our previous talks:

Guiding in Canada, Real Meals, Pulsar NZ, Tahr Foundation, Teaching electric shearing in Mongolia.

Cost is $5 cash per person. There is a fundraising raffle held each time, with the prize winner drawn at the end of the night. Tickets are $2 each; or 3 for $5. Cash.

Club Hunts

Our club organises regular goat and deer hunting trips, offering members the chance to get outdoors, develop their skills, and enjoy great company. These are usually weekend-long adventures, but if you can only join for a day — that’s perfectly fine too.

Goat Hunts
Goat hunts are very popular among our members, and spots fill up fast — so make sure to complete the emailed Google Form quickly to secure your place. These are usually located on private farms where access has been granted by the farmer. Sometimes in tents, sometimes in woolsheds. Sometimes with diy long drops and sometimes with toilets and running water.

Depending on the property and pest control needs, hunters may also be permitted to target pigs, turkeys, Canada geese and possums. Respecting the farmer’s rules is essential, to maintain the strong relationships we have, and ensures we get invited back for future club hunts.

Deer Hunts
Deer hunts are organised throughout the season, often timed around The Roar and aligned with the habitats of different deer species. These hunts are generally held on DOC land, so please ensure you have the correct hunting permit for the area. If you’re unsure, just ask — we’re happy to help.

Most of our hunts take place in the North Island, though members have also organised memorable trips to Stewart Island and other South Island locations.

Range Events

Te Awamutu Club hosts two Range Events each year:

  1. BRANCH CHAMPS held on a Sunday in February/March.
  2. RANGE DAY held on a Sunday in October.

Keep an eye on the calendar for dates.

Held at the Tokoroa Shooting Sports Complex (TSSC), 205 Newell Road, Tokoroa.

HUNTS Course

The Hunter National Training Scheme (HUNTS) is a nationally recognised course developed by the NZDA and delivered by certified trainers through local branches once a year. The course includes a comprehensive training manual and hands-on learning experiences.

Designed for both new and developing hunters, HUNTS covers everything from hunting techniques and shooting skills to safety, navigation, and outdoor preparedness — including appropriate gear, river crossings, compass use, and map reading.

It’s a fun, practical, and rewarding course that helps you build confidence, gain valuable knowledge, and connect with others who share your passion for hunting and the outdoors.

We are very grateful to SHOOTER READY in Cambridge for sponsoring our branch HUNTS Course in 2025, and the upcoming 2026 course.

UPCOMING COURSE STARTS 12th FEBRUARY 2026

Contact the Club for an information and enrolment pack.

Conservation

The NZDA Te Awamutu Branch is proud to play an active role in protecting New Zealand’s native species through ongoing conservation efforts.

Our Maramataha trap line in the Pureora Forest, established in partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC), has been a key focus of our club for the past 12-13 years — and the results are encouraging.

Dedicated club members, with help from local volunteers, service and monitor the traps every two to three weeks to help reduce predator numbers. This work supports the Whio (native blue duck) recovery project and contributes to the wider preservation of Aotearoa’s unique wildlife.

Contact the club if you are keen to help with the upkeep of the trap line.

Committee Meetings

Held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. 7:30pm start.

At the Te Awamutu Smallbore Clubrooms in Factory Rd, Te Awamutu.

Whether you’re on the committee or an active club member, we invite you to get involved and help shape the future of our club. Fresh ideas, creative thinking, and a bit of enthusiastic banter are always welcome!

If you’d like to put your name forward, nominations open in the lead-up to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June.

Prize Giving

Our annual Prize Giving, held in July, is a highlight on the club calendar — a night of good food, great company, and well-deserved recognition. It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of our members, whether behind a rifle, shotgun, or camera lens.

There are three main prize categories:

1. Shooting Category
Based on results from Range Day Events at TSSC throughout the year.

2. Antler, Horn & Tusk (AHT) Category
Entries are assessed at Measuring Night, held about a month before Prize Giving. Keen hunters bring along their antlers, tusks, cleaned heads, tanned hides, and other proud trophies from the past year. While there’s always plenty of friendly banter about whose is bigger than whose, the real focus is on achieving the best Douglas Score and accurate measurements.

3. Photography Category
Printed photos (5×7 or 6×4) must be entered by 1 June and taken within the previous 12 months. All photos are displayed at Measuring Night for everyone to enjoy.
